McNEISH/McNISH/MacNEISH/MacNISH

Septs of the Clan
MacGREGOR

"Royal Is My Race"

The MacGregors claim to be one of the most Royal clans of Scotland
with their descent being from Griogar, son of Alpin,
King of Dalraida in the 8th century.

The lands of the clan could be found on the border of Argyll and
Perthshire and included Glenorchy, Glenstrae, Glenlyon and Glengyle.
Glenorchy, previously owned by the Campbells, had been handed
over to the MacGregors for services to Alexander II, in the conquest
of Argyll.

The MacGregor, proud of the might of their sword, defended their
land vigorously for many years through numerous battles.
They came to be very much despised by the clans surrounding
their holdings and their MacGregor clan reputation dishonoured.
Ultimately, the Crown, attempting to put an end to the constant
upheaval and warring, punished the MacGregor by making
grants of their lands to the clan Campbell, proscribing
the name of MacGregor for all time, and by the persecution
and prosecution of many individual MacGregor clansmen.

Repeal of the Acts against the MacGregor came in 1775.

Our earliest known McNEISH/McNISH Ancestor is

his date and place of death and the names
of his parents are undiscovered as yet.

Historical Notes:

James Kay, R.S.A., R.S.W.

James Kay was born on the Isle of Arran, but after attending
Glasgow School of Art he chose to settle on the mainland,
maintaining a studio in Glasgow and living in Dunbartonshire.
He was always fascinated by the sea and shipping and is
perhaps best known for his powerful, dynamic pictures
of ships at work on the Clyde. His informal, colourful style
was ideal for capturing the bustle and drama of the docks,
the hooting of the tugs and the rush of the ship-wakes
in the harbour and he used it in many other river and
coastal scenes of Holland, the North of France and
of course on the Thames. He often worked in a
distinctive mix of pastel, gouache and watercolour,
though latterly he concentrated on pure oil and watercolour.

His landscapes and street scenes were no less popular
and his lively, bright, dramatic paintings earned him
a considerable reputation both in Scotland and abroad,
particularly in France where he spent much of his time.

A landscape painting of the Village of Lamlash,
viewed from the Whiting Bay Road, painted by
James KAY, R.S.A., R.S.W.
and presented as a gift to the village,
hung for many years in the village hall
before being removed to it's present location
in the Lamlash church for safekeeping.

Historical Note:

Donald McKELVIE
, O.B.E., spent most of the years of his
youth living in Dennistoun District, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
before returning, prior to 1891, to reside in his birthplace,
Lamlash, Kilbride Parish, Isle of Arran, Buteshire.
In Glasgow, Lanarkshire, upon finishing his education,
he was qualified as a Chartered Accountant.

In 1894, taking over management from his aunt,
Jessie McNeish, whom he, his widowed mother and
his sister had assisted for a number of years,
Donald succeeded to the family owned business
"D. McNeish and Son" in Lamlash, the bakery and
grocery business first begun by his grandparents,
Daniel McNeish and Janet Nicol of Lamlash.
These premises were located from circa 1831 on
the site of what is the present day S.C.W.S. shop,
(Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society)
Lamlash, Kilbride Parish, Isle of Arran, Buteshire.

Circa 1901, Donald began growing and breeding potato
plants as a hobby and produced many significant, widely
acclaimed varieties of "Arran Potatoes" during the
remaining course of his lifetime.

His horticultural accomplishments were honoured by
a testimonial dinner in Brodick, Kilbride, Arran in 1925,
which was attended by farmers and businessmen from
locations throughout the United Kingdom.
