A Sept of the Clan Campbell

The oldest common denominator progenitor of the following
McKELVIE
families remains unknown for now.

However, apparently there was a common denominator.
The marriage record of
a McKELVIE son of one branch
to a McKELVIE daughter of the other branch
makes note of the fact that the bride and groom
are second cousins who are marrying.

Modern genealogical research terms and definitions set aside,
it seems fairly reasonable to think that well more than a
century and a quarter ago two people likely would have
been considered second cousins if one parent of each
person were first cousins to each other.

It would then follow that those two older generation first cousins
each had one parent who was a sibling to one parent of the other,
the children of one
McKELVIE

However
this is an intriguing supposition that remains
for now just a theory in the attempt to discover
the actual facts of the known relationship

Historical Note:

Donald McKELVIE
, O.B.E., spent most of the years of his
youth living in Dennistoun District, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
before returning, prior to 1891, to reside in his birthplace,
Lamlash, Kilbride Parish, Isle of Arran, Buteshire.

In Glasgow, Lanarkshire, upon finishing his education,

he was qualified as a Chartered Accountant.

In 1894, taking over management from his aunt,
Jessie McNeish, whom he, his widowed mother and
his sister had assisted for a number of years,
Donald succeeded to the family owned business
"D. McNeish and Son" in Lamlash, the bakery and
grocery business first begun by his grandparents,
Daniel McNeish and Janet Nicol of Lamlash.
These premises were located from circa 1831 on
the site of what is the present day S.C.W.S. shop,
(Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society)
Lamlash, Kilbride Parish, Isle of Arran, Buteshire.

Circa 1901, Donald began growing and breeding potato
plants as a hobby and produced many significant, widely
acclaimed varieties of "Arran Potatoes" during the
remaining course of his lifetime.

His horticultural accomplishments were honoured by
a testimonial dinner in Brodick, Kilbride, Arran in 1925,
which was attended by farmers and businessmen from
locations throughout the United Kingdom.

To Donald McKelvie, MBE
DONALD o' tattie fame

- 'Health to McKelvie!'
Long shall we praise his name
Whilst Arranmen delve ye.

Yea where the 'consul' grows-
