Martin

The earliest genealogy of our MARTIN family
remains quite obscure and difficult to trace
both in North Ireland, where so many records
were destroyed and, also in Scotland.
The surname being so numerous in occurance
compounds the difficulties many times over.

The known path begins in County Down, North Ireland
and makes its way to Ayrshire, Scotland.

First Generation

The earliest known progenitor of our MARTIN family

James MARTIN [....-bef.1872] and his wife, Elizabeth ............ [....-....]

James MARTIN was a gardener by occupation and is believed
to have lived and worked in Co. Down, North Ireland

James MARTIN and his wife, Elizabeth, had one discovered child,

Francis "Edward"
MARTIN
bc 1829 in Annahilt Parish, Co. Down, Ireland

How many other children may have been born to this couple
and, their identities, remains a frustrating mystery, as does the
unknown surname of Elizabeth.

Sometime between their marriage in 1848 and
the earliest discovered birth of a child in 1850,
Francis "Edward" MARTIN and Esther FERGUSSON
emigrated from Co. Down, Ireland to Ayrshire, Scotland.

There were eight known children born to their marriage:

1. Elizabeth MARTIN

Esther
FERGUSON died at Corwar Mains, Colmonell Parish, Ayrshire
on 26 January, 1869, seven months after the birth of her last child
and in the same year as her son Adam died, aged 12 years.
Her burial site is unknown.

A number of the family seemingly disappear
somewhere between the years 1881 and 1891
leaving no discovered trace.

At the time of the census in Scotland
1881
William b 1860, farm labourer, and John b 1868, student,
were living with their father, Francis "Edward" Martin,
general labourer, and his second wife, Agnes Aitken,
at 11 Main Street, Colmonell, Ayrshire.
James, bc 1854, was married and living with his wife and three
eldest born children at Camregan Cot Houses, Dailly, Ayrshire.
Selena b 1865, not yet married, was living in Dailly, Ayrshire,
in private employ as a general house servant to a family.
Sarah Jane b 1852 and Elizabeth b 1863
are unaccounted for and it is not known whether they may
have been deceased or possibly married to spouses yet to be
discovered.

By the time of the 1891 census in Scotland,
with the exception of James Martin, who was already married,
Selena Martin
, who is now married
and John Martin who is now also married,
the remainder of the children are sofar not to be
found in Colmonell Parish or elsewhere in Ayrshire
or indeed, anywhere at all in Scotland.

This same scenario also applies to
Francis "Edward" Martin
and his second wife Agnes Aitken
who cannot be found on the 1891 census anywhere in Scotland

however
Agnes MARTIN, nee AITKEN, aged 72 years,
born c 10 June 1827, Colmonell, Ayrshire
is discovered to have died on 26 March, 1900
at Scaurhead, Colmonell, Barrhill District, Ayrshire

Alexander Aitken, Agnes's brother, also resided
at Scaurhead Cottages, Colmonell, Barrhill District, Ayrshire,
during the census years of 1881 through 1901.

Alexander Aitken, was the
"informant of record" at the death of his sister.

The record of the death of Agnes Aitken MARTIN
indicates "married to Edward Martin, labourer".

At first glance the inconclusive wording of the record
makes it appear that Francis "Edward" Martin
may have been living, though presumably not present
however
At the time of the 1891 Census of Colmonell, Ayrshire
when Alexander Aitken is enumerated residing at
Scaurhead Cottages, living on her own, three cottages away is

Agnes AITKEN
Widow
aged 64 years
born
(1827)
Colmonell, Ayrshire

The very real possibility exists that this individual is indeed
Agnes Aitken Martin

enumerated by her maiden surname,
a not unheard of practice in Scotland
.
This same "Agnes Aitken" is subsequently missing from Scaurhead
Cottages, Colmonell, Ayrshire on the 1901 census of Ayrshire.

If the supposition of her identity is correct, then her husband,
Francis "Edward" Martin,
who was known to be still alive as of December 1889,
died prior to the time of the 1891 census in Scotland.
Additionally:
A search of the General Records Office of Scotland
index of death records reveals an
"Agnes AITKEN"
recorded as deceased,
aged 72 years, in 1900, Colmonell Parish, Ayrshire.
This record proved to be an "AITKEN" surname recording
of the death record of our Agnes MARTIN nee AITKEN
.

A death record for
Francis "Edward" Martin,
born Co. Down, Ireland,
son of James Martin and Elizabeth unknown,
cannot be found in the General Register Office
records of Scotland after repeated searches.

The death date and place and burial site of
Francis "Edward" MARTIN
remain an unsolved mystery.
