McDonald
MacDonald

The Clan Donald is of very ancient origin and the various
branches of the clan are intricately interwoven.
The descent of Clan Donald is from Somerled, Regulus of the Isles who expunged the Western Isles of the Norse invaders during the 12th century A.D.
Somerled was killed at Renfrew in 1164, leaving three sons.
The second son, Reginald, Lord of the Isles, succeeded Somerled, Reginald died in 1207 and, was himself succeeded by his eldest son, Donald "de Isla",  from whom the Clan Donald takes its name.
As Lords of the Isles the Clan Donald were foremost amongst the Highland clans, their chief until 1493 ranking as an Island Sovereign.

The genealogy of our McDonald ancestors and family

Circa 1910, in the recessionary years prior to World War I,
feeling that better opportunities perhaps lay elsewhere,
Donald McDONALD [1860-1926], accompanied by his
son, Archibald MacDONALD [1894-1953] left his then
home in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland and set out for
Toronto, Ontario, Canada, seeking a new life for his family.

Having established himself in Toronto, Ontario and,
having secured a home for his family, leaving his son
Archibald behind to care for business,
Donald McDONALD returned to Paisley
in the spring of 1912 to bring his wife,
Elizabeth Lyle SMITH  and their remaining three
children, aged between 22 and 12 years, out to
their new home in Canada.
The family sailed from Greenock, Scotland, 30th May, 1912,
one short month after the infamous sinking of the ship Titanic,
aboard the Donaldson Steamship Line's
TSS "Athenia"
A number of icebergs were encountered during the voyage and
it was declared to have been quite a nerve-wracking journey.
