Lowry (Lowery)

The Irish surname O Labhradha is in English LOWRY and LAVERY, both these forms being found in almost equal numbers in north-east Ulster where the sept originated. Their territory in mediaeval times was in the neighbourhood of Moira, Co. Down. Branches of the sept were called Baun-Lavery, Roe-Lavery and Trin-Lavery, these epithets being the Gaelic adjectives ban (white), rua (red) and trean (strong)

Early Settlers of Tecumseth Township, Simcoe County

Circa 1835

So far there is little history known about these early Protestant families of the Tecumseth Township area of Simcoe County, Ontario.

There were two LOWRY/LOWERY families resident in the area by 1835 .

It is notable that the variant spellings of "Lowry" and "Lowery" are both commonly seen.

We find members of the same families, buried in the same family plots, using both spellings of the surname on the gravestone inscriptions.

Born a Protestant, after converting to the Catholic faith, Great Great Grandmother,

*Jane LOWRY [1816-1863] b Ireland, m John McCABE [1813-1874] b Ireland
(Catholic, Adjala Township McCabe family)

at St. James Catholic Church, Colgan, Tecumseth Township, Simcoe County, Ontario in 1836.

Jane's place of residence listed on her marriage record is West Gwillimbury.

We believe but, as yet have not proven, that Jane LOWRY was the sister of
one of the following Irish emmigrant LOWRY/LOWERY family heads.
Initially, we had speculated that the two LOWRY/LOWERY men were
possibly brothers but, that would now appear to be most unlikely.

Based solely upon Jane's stated place of residence at the time of her marriage
and the known grant location of the first named family, it would now appear
most likely that Jane was part of the family of Robert LOWERY/LOWRY.
However, this is pure speculation.

Robert LOWERY/LOWRY emmigrated from Co. Cavan, Ireland in 1835
with a family consisting of eight individuals.

He petitioned for a land grant in July of that year and settled at
Lot 24 Concession 13 of Tecumseth Township in Simcoe County
near the border with West Gwillimbury Township in the same county.

We believe that this family may originally have been members of the
congregation of Mt. Tegart Methodist Church in West Gwillimbury, Township.
