Cranny/Cranney/Crannie

Matheson's Special Report on Surnames of Ireland records surnames with five or more entries in the 1890 Birth Index and the main Counties, or Provinces, in which they occured. The birth rate in Ireland in 1890 was 1:44 and from that an approximation can be made of the number of persons of a given surname at that time. The distribution of surnames has not changed significantly since the publication of the report and, it is reasonable to assume that the same pattern existed prior to 1890.

The CRANNY surname had 6 births recorded in 1890: 3 in Leinster Province, 2 in Ulster Province and 1 in Munster Province.

This would indicate a number of only approximately 264 individuals by surname CRANNY living in Ireland at any given time through the 1800's to the present time.

Michael CRANNY, Sr.

Native of Co. Carlow, Ireland, most probably born in the last quarter of the 1700's

The name of his wife has never been mentioned in any document regarding the family discovered in Ontario to date. We have made the unproven assumption that this ggg grandmother quite likely died in Ireland and Michael emigrated from Co. Carlow as a widower with his grown and semi grown children.

Various branches of this family lived in York County, Simcoe County and Grey County, Ontario through the years and the generations following their immigration to Canada.

Two spellings of the surname, CRANNY and CRANNEY, are commonly seen, used interchangebly and, on occasion, simultaneously by various recorders of documents over the years. A third alternate spelling, CRANNIE, is also not unknown.

For ease, and the continuity of this web page, we have chosen to use the spelling "CRANNY" as this appears to be the one recognized in Ireland but, that is not necessarily indicative of the chosen spelling used by various family members over time.
